It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing at the age of 99 of Major Edmund R.M. (Tojo) Griffiths (retired). He was born on June 22, 1922 in London, Ontario. Enlisting in September 1939, Major (retired) Griffiths was a veteran who served in Sicily from Grammichele to Leonforte, Nissoria, Termoli, Ortona and the Arielli River area of Italy. During the Battle of Ortona, he commanded a tank in support of the Seaforth Highlanders. During his 26-year career in the Canadian Army, Major (Ret’d) Griffiths served with the Régiment de Trois-Rivières and the 12th Canadian Armoured Regiment.
Following his retirement in 1965 at the rank of Major, Mr. Griffiths was involved in various conferences, tours, and the publication of articles and books. In 2009, Major (Ret’d) Griffiths was awarded the Canadian Armed Forces Medallion for his continuous service to the CAF and his involvement in the Veterans’ cause.
Major (Ret’d) Griffiths has made regimental history. Our thoughts are with his family. Details of the funeral and the family’s wishes will be shared when available.
